What is a Pantomime in the British style?
Before we go any further, there is something you should understand: there is absolutely no miming in British pantomimes. None. Absolutely none. None at all. Ever. We promise. Imagine American musical comedy with vaudeville routines. It's something like that - well, nearly. Pantomimes are full of peculiar traditions and conventions. The basic plot goes something like this. The hero (a young man played by a woman), aided by the Dame (and older woman played by a man), and abetted by someone dressed as a cat, or a horse, or a cow, defeats the evil villain and ends up with the heroine (strangely, played by a girl). Clear so far? There are silly songs, daft children’s jokes, and lots and lots of audience participation.
