Performed Friday August 7th, 2009. The eccentric,
Sir Charles Bewley has brought his traveling circus show up from Maryland into
Pennsylvania. Kennett Square is his first stop and a huge circus tent has been
hoisted up in the Anson B Nixon Park. Frannie Calhoun, the circus barker, is
roaming the streets of Kennett Square telling anyone who will listen that the
show opens tonight! There is, perhaps, more than a touch of urgency to her
efforts; the show is in trouble. Principia Gains, who has invested her meager
fortune in this tour is threatening to withdraw her investment (egged on, we
should say, by her much poorer sibling, Minima Gains who clearly feels that
Principia could better spend her money – on Minima, for example). The circus
folk know what is going on and tensions are high. Rumors abound that the
mysterious Countess Rasendyl (always accompanied by her less than savory maid,
Spiggot) is a possible alternative investor should Principia withdraw. Captain
Courageous and his two assistants, Marvo and Biff, are not worried. Their
fabulous flea circus will be a hit wherever they play (“see the fleas jump
through flaming hoops without artificial aids of any kind!”). The Castanet
Flamenco dancers (Felicia and Constanzia) plan to return to Portugal if all goes
sour, but Philippo, their guitarist is hopelessly in love with one of the
Singing Royals (Fergie, Diana, and Elizabeth) and won’t be going home. Frontier
Bill and Kansas Kate (lasso and sharpshooting) needed one last show to be able
to retire to their ranch in Wyoming, and Unner Fredricksdotter (the “Icelandic
Nightingale”) is desperately worried that Sir Charles will fire her what ever
happens because there have been complaints that her voice is not what it once
was (and Iceland is so very cold). Petunia Palimsest (the fortune teller) didn’t
see any of this coming – after all, the show played very well in Port Deposit.
Bad Sally, the Great Esperanza’s ventriloquist’s dummy keeps asking everyone for
a loan (“just to the end of the week – you know”) but the Amazing Mona (whose
slightly creepy assistant, Lucy, is rarely seen except during performance)
claims that it doesn’t take much brainpower to guess what Esperanza will spend
the money on: there was that rather ugly incident when a bar tender tried to
expel Esperanza from a bar in Harvre de Grace, and goodness what might have
happened if the Twirly Sisters (Cassie, Frederica and Harriet – “More plates in
the air than you have ever seen!”) had not intervened.
But all this drama
is as nothing compared to what is about to befall! Galloping Gunty, the petulant
ring master, who announces each act while dashing around the ring standing on
the back of a galloping pony, is found most foully murdered outside the Genesis
Building. Special Agent in Charge, Samuel Burger, and his faithful sidekick
Special Agent Nuttley Fries appeal to the citizens of Kennett Square for help.
And so it begins
