Scene One
As the curtain opens , we see a saling ship, the "Courser". A ships bell
rings three times. STORMALONG, BOSUN FLASK, RATLIN, STUBB and TAYCUL and the
CHORUS (the FISHERMEN, FISHWIVES and MERMAIDS wearing costumes indicative of
some far port, make their way through the audience bearing crates of cargo. They
climb to the stage as they sing
It's a tough, tough life full of toil and
strife
We sailing men undergo
And we don't give a toss when the gale is done
How hard the winds did blow
'Cause we're homeward bound to Bletchertown
On the Courser taut and free
And we sail like the devil until were home
Our sweethearts for to see, brave boys, our sweethearts for to see....
These are the opening words of C. A Green's brand
new pantomime in the British style (but with its roots firmly embedded in
Connecticut folk tales)! Expect sea shanty's, romantic wind blown heroes, winsome
heroines and piratical baddies.
